Local Aesthetic Block for Lip Filler Masterclass

Learn the ‘Hourglass method’ for painfree, quicker lip filler treatments: a combination of injectable and topical local anaesthetic.

Improve your patient’s comfort and save valuable clinic time using local anaesthetic injections.

Lip filler treatments can be daunting for both practitioner and patient. Often, the biggest worry is of intolerable pain. Whilst topical anaesthetic creams can be occasionally effective, most patients continue to report significant pain during lip filler treatments. In addition, for topical anaesthesia to be effective, sufficient time must be allowed (approx 30-45mins for most topical formulations), which results in the need for longer clinic appontments. On this course, we share our safe and time-saving strategy for the use of local anaesthetic blocks (also called ‘infra-orbital’ or ‘dental’ blocks) in combination with topical anaesthetic, which results is maximal patient comfort and much quicker procedure times. We take pride in being the first to develop an Aberdeen-based, regularly available course of this kind! The course is aimed at regulated Heathcare Professionals (registered Doctors, Dentists, Dental Technicians, Dental Hygienists, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists)

What does this course cover?

This is a half-day course and is delivered by experienced Aesthetic Practitioners (Doctors) with Medical and Medical Research backgrounds. The aim is to establish a solid, scientific grounding in the use of injectable local anaesthetic for lip filler treatments, and the safe delivery of anaesthesia in a practical clinical setting. You will need to provide 1-2 models consenting to the treatments and photography. You will be delivering the local anaesthetic block and can perform the lip filler treatment if you are trained to do so. Otherwise, Dr. Hassan Abbas will carry out the lip filler procedure. To achieve our aim, the course contains three components:

  • Theory (2hrs)
    Key Facial anatomy
    Local anaesthesia science & indications
    Local anaesthesia technique
    Local anaesthesia complications & emergencies

  • Practical (4hrs)

    Practical Demonstration
-Safe patient selection and informed consent
-Local anaesthetic injection technique (demonstration & trainee practice)

  • Consolidation and Support
Trainee pack containing all theory slides, materials and equipment summary, emergency algorithms (Resus Council UK)
Useful contacts (aesthetics insurance, reputable pharmacies & manufacturers, professional organisations)
The course concludes with a brief written assessment
A printed certificate rewarded on completion
Feedback forms - we require this to improve our course
Facebook support network and direct contact with Dr. Abbas

Will my training be recognised by leading aesthetics insurance providers?

Yes, our course is fully recognised and insured by Cosmetic Insure, a leading aesthetics insurance provider in the UK. This means that your training will be professionally acknowledged when seeking indemnity cover. If you are unsure whether your Healthcare-type profession will be granted indemnity cover, we strongly encourage you to check before you register (we will do the same). Being able to legally inject local anaesthetic for lip filler at your clinic following your training however will depend on the setting you chose to operate from. Independent pracitioners (private clinics) in Scotland must be registered with Healthcare Improvement Scotland (HIS). Please read their guidance carefully.

Do I need to be a Prescriber?

No, you do not. However, you will need to identify a prescriber you can work alongside for you to take full responsiblity for your treatments. On occasion you may need a prescription of antibiotics, steroids or hyaluronidase to treat complications for example and your prescriber may need to perform a face-to-face consultation prior to issuing a prescription of certain drugs.

Where does the course take place?

The entire training day takes place at the dedicated Hourglass Aesthetics Training Academy on 43 Schoolhill, Aberdeen, AB10 1JT.

What does the course cost?

The full cost of the course is £650 (no added charges). The programme is excellent value for money given the comprehensive theoretical content and intensive hands-on practical exposure in the afternoon. Our trainee group size is small with trainee to trainer ratio of 4:1 or 5:1 max. We do not charge models you provide on this course, and any charge you incur upon them is at your discretion.

What if I feel I need more training or supervision before I start offering local anaesthetic injections?

That’s not a problem. Recognising the limits of your competency is an important professional attribute. We want to support you throughout your early aesthetics career and we want to produce confident, safe practitioners. We can offer further clinical supervision while you practice your filler procedures. Please see our Professional Services for more information.
