Injectable Polynucleotides

Background

Polynucleotides have emerged as innovative agents in skincare and cosmetic treatments due to their regenerative properties. Originally studied for their role in DNA and RNA, polynucleotides are now used to rejuvenate skin by promoting hydration, and tissue regeneration. These molecules help improve skin texture, elasticity, and overall appearance by stimulating collagen production and can also be used to enhance wound healing. Polynucleotide-based treatments are a great option and have gained popularity for their natural and effective approach to combating signs of aging and improving skin health. Polynucleotides can be used as a standalone therapy or alongside other aesthetic treatments such as Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers.

Treatment Indications

Polynucleotides can be used in various areas due to their regenerative and healing properties. Here are some common indications:

1. Skin Rejuvenation - Polynucleotides are often used in aesthetic treatments to improve skin texture, elasticity, and hydration, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Polynucleotides can be great for smokers lines, and tear trough areas.

2. Wound Healing - Their regenerative properties make polynucleotides useful in treating chronic wounds, burns, and post-surgical and acne scars, as they promote tissue repair and accelerate healing.

3. Hair Restoration - Polynucleotide-based treatments can help stimulate hair growth and improve scalp health, making them useful in addressing hair thinning or alopecia. Please be in touch before booking in for this treatment.

4. Joint and Tissue Repair - In orthopaedics, polynucleotides may be used to support the repair of damaged tissues, such as cartilage and tendons, aiding in the recovery from injuries and degenerative conditions.

5. Stretch marks - Polynucleotides can be used to assist in the fading of stretch marks by promoting tissue repair.

These applications leverage the natural regenerative capabilities of polynucleotides to enhance healing, restore function, and improve aesthetic outcomes.

Contraindications

Polynucleotides are generally safe and have minimal complications when administered by an experienced Medical Practitioner. However, there are some important contraindications to be aware of:

  • Fish Allergies - Polynucleotides are contraindicated for individuals with fish allergies, as some products may be derived from fish sources.

  • Breastfeeding and Pregnancy - It is recommended to avoid polynucleotide treatments during pregnancy and breastfeeding to ensure the safety of both mother and child.

  • Body Dysmorphia Disorder (BDD) - Patients with BDD should be carefully evaluated before considering any aesthetic treatments, as their perceptions may lead to unrealistic expectations or dissatisfaction with results.

These contraindications are essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatment. Always discuss your medical history and any concerns with your practitioner before proceeding with treatment.

Potential Side Effects and Complications

Polynucleotides are generally considered safe, especially when used in aesthetic and medical treatments. However, like any treatment, they can have potential side effects. Common side effects include:

1. Mild Swelling or Redness - Temporary swelling, redness, or bruising may occur at the injection site in aesthetic treatments, but these usually resolve within a few days.

2. Pain or Discomfort - Some individuals may experience minor pain or discomfort during or after the procedure, though this is typically mild and short-lived. We aim to keep you as comfortable as possible and use local anaesthetic cream as required.

3. Allergic Reactions - Although rare, allergic reactions to polynucleotide products can occur, leading to itching, rash, or more severe symptoms in sensitive individuals.

4. Infection - There is a small risk of infection at the injection or application site, as with any procedure that breaks the skin barrier, though proper aseptic techniques minimize this risk.

5. Lumps or Nodules - In rare cases, small lumps or nodules can form under the skin at the injection site.

Overall, polynucleotide treatments are well-tolerated, and serious side effects are uncommon. However, we emphasise the importance of booking in for a consultation with one of our aesthetic practitioners before booking on for treatment to ensure this is an appropriate and safe treatment for your specific needs. The rate of serious complications is minimal, if there is a medical emergency our practitioners will be there on hand.

Procedure

Following a thorough consultation to establish 1) an appropriate indication and 2) no barriers to treatment, you have the opportunity to leave things as they are to consider matters further (a ‘cooling off’ period), or to proceed with treatment on the day following fully informed written consent. This means that following thorough discussion, you consent to the treatment with full understanding of the benefits and risks.

Basline photography is taken with your permission. Your skin will be disinfected. Local anaesthetic numbing cream (‘Emla’) is applied. Your practitioner will be wearing a mask and gloves. A series of superficial injections is made to the skin with a fine needle in the desired area(s). The session takes approximately 1hr. You may notice tiny puncture marks and it is common to have a small amount of oozing due to the highly vascular nature of the human face.

Prior to departing, a follow-up appointment is arranged, you receive aftercare instructions and clinic contacts in case of any concerns/emergency.

Aftercare

Following Injectable Polynucleotide treatment we would advise that:

  • Avoid touching/rubbing the area for 12 hours.

  • Refrain from applying makeup or heavy skincare products for 12 hours.

  • To minimize bruising, consider using arnica cream or tablets, which is available at most pharmacies and supermarkets.

  • For the next 24 hours, avoid excessive alcohol, strenuous exercise, and extensive sun exposure, as these can increase the risk of bruising by promoting vasodilatation.

  • If you experience discomfort, take Paracetamol, but avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, or other anti-inflammatory medications, as they may contribute to bruising.

  • Persistent, localised pain is unusual. If you experience this or have any other concerns, such as significant swelling, itchiness, color changes, discharge, or feeling unwell, please contact your Aesthetic Practitioner immediately.

Your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities, so don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or notice anything concerning.

Frequently Asked

+ How much does the procedure cost and how many sessions do I need?

A course of 3 treatments is recommended for optimal results, then maintenance sessions as and when required.

£250 per treatment. This price is based per area you wish to be treated. For example if you wished to treat both neck and eyes the total treatment price would be £500.

£600 if booking x3 sessions in advance.

+ Is the procedure painful?

The procedure involves the use of needles so can cause pain during, and briefly following treatment. To address this, we discuss your anaesthetic strategy beforehand, which usually involves local anaesthetic numbing cream ('Emla').

+ When will I notice results?

Results are instant, but the final, most natural appearance develops over 1-2 weeks as the polynucleotides integrate with your tissue and promote collagen generation. We recommend staying well hydrated during this period.

+ How long will my results last?

The duration of results varies by the individual. Typically, results last up to a year with a course of three treatments and between 3-6 months with a single treatment.

+ How soon can I have my next Polynucleotide treatment?

There is no strict restriction on repeating treatment but we would recommend 2 weeks between each session when commencing a course. After the recommended initial 3 sessions, you can spread your maintenance sessions as you wish. Typically clients have maintenance treatment monthly.

+ Can I have facial peels or dermaroller treatment with Polynucleotides?

We recommend waiting two weeks after your polynucleotide treatment before having facial peels or dermaroller treatments in the same area. Alternatively, these treatments can be scheduled before your appointment.

+ Do I need a follow-up appointment?

We offer all patients a follow-up appointment 1-2 weeks following treatment. This is to ensure results are satisfactory, there are no concerns and no complications. This can be done in-person or virtually.
