Non-surgical rhinoplasty, often known as a non-surgical nose job, or dermal filler nose job, is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of the nose without surgery. Many people are now choosing non-surgical rhinoplasty over traditional surgical rhinoplasty, thanks to its shorter procedure time, quicker recovery time, and lower cost, not to mention the excellent results it can deliver.

What does non-surgical rhinoplasty do?

Many features of the nose may cause dissatisfaction with its appearance, affecting self-esteem and confidence.

Fortunately, non-surgical rhinoplasty can help correct a wide range of such imperfections:

  • A mildly crooked appearance of the nose (deviated spine)

  • A drooping tip of the nose

  • A bump on the bridge of the nose (dorsal hump)

  • A flat bridge of the nose

  • Age-related changes

  • Poor appearance of the nose following unsuccessful surgical rhinoplasty

How does non-surgical rhinoplasty work?

Non-surgical nose jobs work by injecting filler into the tissue on or around the nose. The most commonly used of these fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a substance that is naturally produced by the body.

Depending on where it is injected, HA will have different effects. In order to achieve the desired result, the clinician will inject a small volume of the HA filler into certain areas of the nose. For example, to correct a bump in the nose (dorsal hump), the clinician can inject filler into the bridge of the nose above the bump, to smoothen out the nose. To fix a drooping tip of the nose, the clinician can inject filler around the base of the nostrils, to lift the tip of the nose up.

The clinician will apply a numbing (local anaesthetic) cream to the area before injecting, meaning the procedure is relatively painless.

The whole procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes and results typically last up to a year.

Is non-surgical rhinoplasty safe?

When performed by well trained Healthcare Professionals, the overall risk of complications from injectable treatments is very low. These procedures remain invasive nevertheless and there are potential side effects and complications your practitioner should discuss with you in detail.

Minor side effects of non-surgical rhinoplasty include swelling, bruising and temporary redness. These usually in a few days to a week.

More serious complications can happen, but these are thankfully rare. The procedure involves injecting into the nose and surrounding tissue, an area of the face with many blood vessels. Because of this, there is a small risk that filler may be injected into one of the blood vessels (vascular occlusion) causing injury to the tissue and ultimately, scarring. In very rare cases, this can lead to blindness if associated with the vessels connected to the eyes. Excessive filler can also compress blood vessels , which can result in permanent redness, and in severe cases damage and scarring to the surrounding skin.

The risks of non-surgical rhinoplasty can be minimised by choosing an experienced clinician who fully understands the science and anatomy behind the procedure, and is trained in identifying and reversing any potential complications.

Why should I choose non-surgical rhinoplasty?

Easy reversal

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is not permanent, although it can last up to a year. This is a great advantage over surgery, should the result not be to your liking. This also means that treatment can be easily adjusted or staged. HA filler can be broken down by injection of an enzyme called hyaluronidase, in the event of any complications, or a poor result that cannot wait for the filler to naturally break down.

Lower risk

Because the procedure does not require putting you to sleep with a general anaesthetic as surgery does, there are no anaesthetic-associated risks. The infection risk is also lower.

Quicker recovery

Recovery time is dramatically shorter than in surgery. Patients experience less bruising and swelling during recovery and do not need to take any time off work.

Lower cost

Non-surgical nose jobs can save you thousands of pounds on the cost of a surgical procedure. However, it is important to be aware that not all cases can be treated non-surgically. A thorough consultation is essential to establish suitability.
